GETTING STARTED>>

Sigma Pi starts new chapters by working with students and local alumni in cultivating an "Interest Group" on campus.

Upon contacting the Executive Office with an interest of bringing Sigma Pi to a campus, we will coordinate a visit to your group by a member of our expansion department. The purpose of this visit is to allow your group the opportunity to talk face to face with an official representative of the Fraternity. His duty will be to answer all questions about starting a colony, as well as assess the quality and character of the men interested in starting the colony. During this visit our representative will also take the time to visit with the appropriate university student activities officials and local alumni.

After the visit, we will continue to work with the student(s) and with the campus administration in recruiting interested students. Typically, once students on campus hear word that a new fraternity may be colonizing, they jump at the opportunity to become a founding father of the new group. Colonies begin with a minimum of 25 students, which typically takes just a few weeks to recruit.

During the colonization visit, our representative will work in conjunction with the university and local alumni to facilitate goal setting, training, and brotherhood building activities.  There are many unique benefits to starting a Sigma Pi colony:

  • Unlike other fraternities, Sigma Pi does not have a limit on how long a colony must maintain colony status in order to charter. As colony members, you can work to gain your charter as quickly as you wish. To charter, colonies are required to meet both the fraternity and host institution's standards before being voted on by the Grand Council (governing body of the fraternity).
  • Sigma Pi allows everyone that joins the colony from the time of colonization to the time of chartering to become founding fathers. There are no "pledge classes" and everyone enters into the fraternity at the same level. Some fraternities only allow the original colony members to be Founding Fathers. In Sigma Pi, you will continue recruiting even after colonization and bring in your friends and other new members and allow them to have the same founding father experience!
  • Sigma Pi colonies get their first year of insurance waived (each fraternity/sorority pays insurance). During the first year of operation, Sigma Pi colonies do not have to pay insurance (colony is however covered by insurance), therefore new colonies are able to establish themselves and become financially stable.
  • By starting your own fraternity you get the opportunity to hold a leadership position right away, set your own social dues, compete against other organizations, establish a new brotherhood, meet new people, join a lifelong membership and network, build your resume, become a founding father and leave a lifelong legacy for those to come!  The possibilities are endless!
